Welcome to the #DragonFamily Jasmine Nelson

Q: What drew you to MSUM?
A: I earned my Speech Language Hearing Sciences (SLHS) undergraduate and Speech Language Pathology (SLP) graduate degrees from MSUM and enjoyed my time as a Dragon. The wonderful educational experience I had drew me to apply for the SLP Clinician position. Knowing the incredible supervisors and professors I had throughout my education could become my colleagues was inspiring.

Q: What about MSUM has surprised you so far?
A: I have been surprised by the collaboration efforts between departments. The efforts everyone completes daily to assist other departments does not go unnoticed.

Q: What are you most excited about regarding your new position?
A: I am most excited to begin to see outpatient clients at the MSUM Speech Language Hearing Sciences clinic. The areas of SLP that interest me the most are articulation, language, orofacial myology, and feeding.

Q: Are there any fun projects you are currently working on?
A: I recently wrapped up providing "extended summer speech therapy" to some of our SLHS clinic clients who expressed interest in continuing services between the summer and fall semesters. I am currently preparing to provide speech teletherapy services to a Minnesota elementary school beginning this Fall.

Q: What's something people may not know about you?
A: I have water-skied on the ocean!

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
A: I would love to travel to Bora Bora. It looks like a beautiful and tranquil place for a nice relaxing vacation. But honestly, anywhere with a beach - I'm in.

Q: What is your favorite emoji to use and why?
A: My favorite emoji to use is the upside-down smiling face. I like that it can convey many different meanings depending on the context of the conversation (e.g., sarcasm, dry humor, irony, confusion, silliness, etc.).

Q: What advice do you have for students who want to go into a similar field as you?
A: My advice is to take classes related to the field that may not be required for your degree. This will better your understanding of other areas and other professionals you will work closely with once you begin your career.
