Welcome to the #DragonFamily: Kwame Addey

Kwame Addey is MSUM's new Assistant Professor of Business Analysis. Kwame teaches students how to use data to make informed decisions that can help companies to reduce costs.

Q: What drew you to MSUM?
A: I had been going from a graduate student to a research assistant professor for the last eight years. During that time, I did a lot of research using models and different machine learning methods. I reached a point where I felt I needed to teach people how to use those models. MSUM gave me that opportunity to teach more students, and I appreciate the Midwestern culture. So, I decided to move here.

Q: What's something that surprised you about MSUM?
A: The people here are warm, friendly, and helpful, so it doesn't feel like I'm new-except for finding new places.

Q: What's your go-to productivity trick?
A: Wake up early in the morning, get my coffee (normally I prefer coffee without sugar because I drink a lot of coffee. If I took every cup with sugar, that would be too much.) and some lemon juice, meditate, and then start the day.

Q: If you could only have three apps on your phone, what would they be?
A: That's tough, but I would choose Outlook for my emails, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp.

Q: What would we most likely find you doing on the weekend?
A: Cooking for the family, working on my research, or chatting with family. I have a big family-four kids and my wife-so I spend a lot of time with them.

Q: If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be?
A: George Dantzig, a mathematician and operations research analyst. He did a lot of work in operations research and was influential in helping America during World War II with optimization techniques. I'd love to know how he thought about things and how he arrived at his conclusions, especially since he did it all by hand, whereas now we use computers.

Q: What's the most interesting thing you're working on right now?
A: I have been researching the risks associated with stocks markets. With the rise of artificial intelligence, companies that deal with AI products have seen their stock prices soar. Everyone is jumping into them, but no one's thinking about the risk.
