Born in South Dakota, Ruben Nelson was the son of a farm family who made his mark in the law, politics, and public service. A graduate of Hamline University, Nelson was admitted to the Minnesota bar in 1928 and established his practice in Breckinridge, Wilken County. He became the senior partner of his own firm, Nelson, Clemmensen, and Reuthen, in 1949.
Incorporated in 1964, the Red River Valley Historical Society is “a central agency for coordinating and encouraging the preservation and making known of those aspects of Red River Basin history that would be of general concern.” The society acts as a liaison among historical groups in the Red River Valley area, including organizations in North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Canada.
The Vietnam protest movements in Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota began slowly in 1966 and 1967, and grew to be among the most active anti-war movements in the rural upper Midwest. Douglas H. Sillers was born in Clavin, North Dakota on February 9, 1915. He was the second son of Archie and Mabel Tuthill Sillers. His two brothers were Kipling, born in 1913, and Colin, who was born in 1917. Douglas Sillers completed high school at Calvin, where his father farmed, and left home in 1933 to travel through the western states.
The District 23 School Masters’ Club was formed in 1929 with the purpose of creating a club for male teachers, principals, and school superintendents in western Minnesota. The main purpose of this club was to allow easy communication between members on educational matters and topics. The club also had a strong social aspect and the informal structure of the club reflected this.
