M.J. Solum came to the United States at age 15 in 1888. In 1893 he engaged in the hardware business in Hitterdal, Minnesota until his death. The store remained open until 1973. The Solum Store was a general merchandise store dealing in coal, twine, machinery, and grain lift movers.
Joseph Graba was born March 3, 1938 in Wadena County, Minnesota. He graduated from Bemidji State College with a B.S. in Biology. Mr. Graba undertook some graduate work at Bemidji and Colorado State College. During Mr. Graba's years in office (1970-76) he was active in the field of Education, being chairman of the Education Committee for the Midwest Conference of the Council of State Governments.
This collection consists mostly of newspaper summaries published in Roseau County located in northern Minnesota. This collection was kept by Earl Chapin, a newspaper editor from that region. A few miscellaneous items are also in the collection including a short history of Roseau County, an article pertaining to the Sioux-French conflict in 1736, and miscellaneous correspondence.
The American Federation of Musicians received its national charter from the American Federation of Labor on November 6, 1896. The AFM was founded to provide musicians with a better organized union than the older National League of Musicians, a professional organization.
The Aabye Store, later the Ericksen Fairway Store, was started in 1880 near Perley, Minnesota by Andrew Aabye. In 1884, the railroad came to Perley and Mr. Aabye moved his store into Perley. It was one of the first buildings in Perley. The store was owned and operated for three generations before its final closing.

Arlan Ingehart Stangeland was born in Fargo, North Dakota in 1930. His family moved to Moorhead, Minnesota, graduating in 1948. He became a farmer in Wilkin County, Minnesota, gradually becoming active in Minnesota politics.
A native of Rutland, North Dakota, Marvin Evenson was involved in politics from his early 20s, both in both North Dakota and Minnesota. He served as a party organizer for the Democratic Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party in a number of capacities, including Finance Director and chairman for the 9th District of the DFL in Minnesota, and chairman of the DFL party in the 7th District (northwest Minnesota). As party chairman, Evenson coordinated party activities for many DFL candidates.
