The Vietnam protest movements in Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota began slowly in 1966 and 1967, and grew to be among the most active anti-war movements in the rural upper Midwest. The movement peaked in 1970 with protests against the Kent State incident. Much of the anti-war activities in these two communities originated at the Moorhead State College campus.
The St. Ansgar Hospital [Moorhead, Minnesota] Auxiliary was organized in 1955. Mrs. Harriet Geib was elected first president. Leon Simon was born in 1927, the son of Harry Simon, a Russian immigrant. Leon Simon, along with his brother Jack, became partners with their father in the furniture business in 1931. Along with Simon’s Furniture Store, the Simon’s owned and operated Simon’s Warehouse Corporation as well as being involved in the ownership of three shopping centers in the Fargo-Moorhead [North Dakota-Minnesota] area.

The objective of the WCTU is “for the education of public sentiment towards total abstinence from the use of all alcoholic beverages and the abolition of the traffic in such liquors.”
The Lumber operation at Wolverton, Minnesota was originally known as the Gull River Lumber Company. Sometime about 1900, it became a branch yard of the White Lumber Company which was established in Fargo, North Dakota in 1873.
Born in South Dakota, Ruben Nelson was the son of a farm family who made his mark in the law, politics, and public service. A graduate of Hamline University, Nelson was admitted to the Minnesota bar in 1928 and established his practice in Breckinridge, Wilken County. He became the senior partner of his own firm, Nelson, Clemmensen, and Reuthen, in 1949.
The Moorhead Area Retired Educators Association serves as a local unit of the Retired Educators Association of Minnesota and is affiliated with the National Retired Teachers Association. The purposes of the MAREA are to help retired teachers maintain an identity with the teaching profession, to further the causes of education, to help advance the interest and welfare of the retired teachers in the state and local community, to foster good fellowship among retired teachers, and to cooperate with NRTA and REAM by promoting membership, legislation, projects, and programs.
