The Red River Reading Council (RRRC) was established in October 1958, by professor Allen Erickson of Moorhead State University. A year later it affiliated with the Minnesota Reading Association. Membership is open to anyone interested in the promotion of reading and research in reading.
Mexican-Americans have been migrating to the Red River Valley since the late 1920s, primarily to work on the sugar beet farms during the summer weeding and the fall harvest. Since the introduction of mechanical cultivators and harvesters in the1950s, the need for field labor has declined, but the number of migrants has continued to grow. As a result, many Mexican-Americans have begun to settle permanently in Minnesota and North Dakota towns in the Valley.
Donald Sinclair was born January 9, 1899 in Stephen, Minnesota. He served in the United States Navy during World War I. After his tour of duty, he attended the University of Minnesota, graduating from there in 1924. Mr. Sinclair was married and had three children.
The Cheryl Nelson Lossett Performing Arts Series events are held either in Delmar J. Hansen Theatre or on the Gaede Stage in the Roland Dille Center for the Arts, located on the Minnesota State Moorhead campus.
David J. Beauchamp was born September 6, 1940 in Langdon, North Dakota. He graduated from the St. Francis Elementary and secondary school in Langdon and then attended St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from there in 1962. From 1962 to 1964, David Beauchamp worked with the Peace Corps in Thailand.
The Moorhead Women’s Christian Temperance Union was organized in 1948. The WCTU grew from five women in 1948 to a membership of thirty-seven in 1960. The Moorhead WCTU is affiliated with the National WCTU and the National organization is part of the World Union which has a membership of seventy-seven countries.
This chapter of the WCTU was organized in 1891, and was named the Scandinavian WCTU. The chapter contained members from both Fargo, North Dakota, and Moorhead, Minnesota. The chapter pursued the WCTU goals of educating the public on the dangers of alcohol and drugs.
The Women’s Christian Temperance Union is an organization of Christian women banded together for the protection of the home, the abolition of the liquor traffic, and the triumph of Christ’s Golden Rule in custom and in law. The Lucy Hayes Union was founded in 1886 and reorganized in 1889. The early records have been lost. The bulk of this collection is dated from 1933 to 1969.
Henry Nycklemoe was born c. 1982 in the United States. During the First World War he served in the U.S. Navy. After the war Mr. Nycklemoe became a lawyer and set up practice in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, sometime in the 1920s. During the 1930s he became a local judge.
Raised in South Dakota, Cynthia Palmer moved to Moorhead in 1986. Since that time, she has been involved in a number of activities with a number of organizations concerning public policies in Moorhead, especially issues dealing with poverty, human rights, community betterment, and accountability of elected officials.
