Finance student journey from MSUM to Global Leadership
Finance graduate Najam Usmani has built a career spanning multiple countries and industries, mentoring thousands of employees along the way. His career reflects years of growth and impact, earning widespread leadership recognition.
But when asked what he does, his answer is simple: “I create opportunities.”
That philosophy started at Moorhead, where Najam found his own opportunities. As a 19-year-old freshman from Pakistan, he self-funded his education and was committed to getting the most out of four years in college.
He found professors who stayed after class, mentors who pushed him to think bigger, and a community that welcomed him with open arms.
“They made me feel like I belonged,” Najam says. “I didn’t know anything about this country, but the people here took me in.”
Those experiences shaped how he sees the world and how he wants to lead it.
As a student, Najam quickly learned that growth didn’t happen inside a comfort zone. He immersed himself in different communities, built relationships across cultures, and developed discipline.
“College gives you a platform. It teaches you time management, communication, and networking. For four years, you’re proving to yourself that you can stay committed,” he says.
Years later, Najam became one of the first 500 Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers, recognized by Bill Gates. He built nearly 400 retail locations, rose to the top ranks of tax preparation companies nationwide, and has hired, trained and influenced more than 2,700 employees over 25 years.
His work has taken him across the globe -- from trade missions in China to business deals across Europe, Asia, and the U.S. However, Najam’s role isn’t defined by a single industry or title.
“I’m not a subject matter expert,” he says. “I just connect people.”
Najam has built a career on relationships and bringing together the right people at the right time. A clear example of that is Full Bright Ventures, the company he founded and manages. Full Bright offers a portfolio of businesses that can help any business in areas such as customer service, real estate, workwear, and marketing.
“Being resourceful is more important than being a resource,” he explains.
Over time, that mindset has grown beyond business. What started as a pursuit of opportunity has become a commitment to impact. Najam was awarded the Mayor’s International Community Award for Global Leaders in 2018.
Today, Najam is looking toward public service, with the goal of running for office in the coming years. For him, it’s an opportunity to serve on a larger scale and create change beyond individual ventures.
“If your life is worth something, it’s meant to serve people,” he says.
That belief traces back to Moorhead — to the classrooms, mentors, and community that first showed him what opportunity looks like when it’s shared.
