Former campus news anchor turned state communications director for U.S. senator
Broadcast journalism and political science alum Jordan Schroeer’s career began in the campus newsroom. Now he’s leading communications for a United States senator.
When he arrived at Minnesota State Moorhead, he only knew that he loved current events, cared about people, and wanted to understand the world around him. He didn’t imagine that years later he’d be recognized by the MSUM Foundation with the Outstanding Young Alumni Award. He also didn’t imagine he’d be working as the state communications director for United States Senator Tina Smith.
The Outstanding Young Alumni award honors graduates who have made a significant impact in their careers or community. Along with his work with Senator Tina Smith, who is a women’s rights and clean energy leader, Jordan has covered major stories during his eight years in journalism, served as a literacy tutor and board member for GiGi’s Playhouse, and has publicly spoken about his experience growing up as a gay man, inspiring many LGBTQ+ individuals.
“It’s heartwarming to know that the work I’ve done is recognized,” he says. “And at the same time, it’s humbling, because I feel like there’s still so much more to do. But it’s a good reminder to pause, notice where you are, and appreciate what it took to get there.”

From Campus News to Capitol Hill
For Jordan, Moorhead was the place where his interests grew into purpose. He credits Campus News, Moorhead’s student-run broadcast, as one of the most influential experiences of his college years. It offered real-world pressure paired with the grace students need to learn.
“Campus News was a place where you could make mistakes, fix them, and try again,” he says.

Outside the studio, he served as a Student Orientation Counselor (now called First Year Mentor) and Dragon Ambassador, roles that strengthened his communication and leadership skills. When it came to landing his first professional role, Jordan is clear about where it began.
“Going to MSUM is how I got my first job. Easy as that,” he says. “The first job became a domino that led to all the others. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.”
The first opportunity at WDAY launched several years of reporting, storytelling, and community engagement. He eventually transitioned to political communications, which was a natural evolution, combining his passion for public service and interest in current events. “What’s happening in government and politics – and how journalists report on it – is not just words. It has a real impact on real people.”
An Impact Beyond His Career
His proudest moments have come from speaking openly about his identity as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, whether that is on air or through a Moorhead Magazine story. He’s received messages from people who felt seen, from parents who gained new understanding of their children, and from individuals who wished someone they knew could have heard his story.
“Sometimes the most important thing you can do is tell someone, ‘I see you. I hear you,’” he says. “Knowing that my words helped someone feel less alone—that’s the impact I’m most proud of.”
It’s a lesson that guides not only how Jordan approaches his work, but also the message he hopes to pass on to current students.
“Take chances. Don’t be afraid to say yes. And when you’re uncertain, just show up.”
On warm days, you may still see Jordan walking through Moorhead’s campus or attending events hosted by the university. “MSUM has always felt like home,” he says.
The place that shaped Jordan’s voice helped propel him to the U.S. Senate and recognition as an Outstanding Young Alumni. It all started with hands-on experience, a campus community that believed in him, and the confidence to say yes to every opportunity.
