Stacy Broman receives Distinguished Alumni Award
Throughout her professional successes and personal milestones, one thing has remained constant for Stacy Broman ’85. Her biggest cheerleaders and supporters have been the friends and family she met while she was a student at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
“They remain some of my closest friends today,” she says. “I cannot begin to express to you just how meaningful these friendships are.”
Today Broman is a partner at Meagher & Geer PLLP, a firm where she represents insurers in complex litigation and bad faith matters nationally. Her work has placed her on a number of “best lawyer” lists. Among her honors: she was named Minneapolis Best Lawyers Insurance Lawyer of the Year in 2013.
Broman is also the recipient of a 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award. The award recognizes alumni who are at the peak of their professional careers and who have made significant contributions to their professional fields and communities.
Broman grew up in northeastern South Dakota and chose MSUM because she wanted to attend a different school than her high school classmates. On campus, she declared herself an economics major – something that not many first-year students proclaimed.
“I found the subject interesting and thought it might be a good preparation for law school,” she says.
As a student, Broman joined a sorority and the speech team, the latter which resulted in a memory not easily forgotten.
Broman and her teammates were returning from a weekend tournament when a snowstorm made travel treacherous. Broman left the vehicle she was driving on the side of Interstate 94 and piled into the other vehicle, which slowly made its way back to Moorhead. The following Monday, she returned the key with a message that the car was still parked on the interstate.
“I assume somebody picked up the car,” she says. “It was really scary at the time, but it’s one of the stories we tend to tell.”
Broman, an only child, met her husband and several future in-laws at MSUM. Friendships made through the sorority continue on today, decades later.
“They’re always supportive and helpful,” she says of her friends. “They show up; they’re right there.”
After MSUM and law school, Broman joined Meagher & Geer, which specializes in insurance litigation. In addition to making partner, she is one of the firm's leaders as a member of its management committee. The firm has 86 lawyers in four offices across the country.
Law has proven to be a challenging and fulfilling career.
“If you have a passion for the law and it’s what you really want to do, there are so many opportunities” she says.
Broman has used her passion for law and applied it to help others succeed in the field. She serves on the board of directors of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC) and co-chaired its diversity committee. In July, she received the 2020 Diversity Award from FDCC for her support of diversity efforts both within and outside the legal community.
She also volunteers and helps to raise funds for Southern Minnesota Legal Services. The agency provides free, high-quality legal assistance to low-income people facing critical civil matters.
Sharing her talents and passions with others is a natural extension of Broman’s heart and grit, two values nurtured at MSUM.
“I learned the value of hard work and giving back,” she says. “There are so many who are less fortunate and there is such a need for good legal work.”
