Welcome to the Dragon Community: Karissa Kjos
Karissa Kjos is Minnesota State Moorhead's new Assistant Director for Student Organizations and Engagement. Karissa supports and assists student organizations, fosters student engagement and connections, and helps shape Moorhead's campus culture.
Q: What drew you to work at Moorhead State?
A: I'm a proud alum! MSUM's student life changed me so much, so I want to give that experience to other students as well.
Q: What are some skills from previous jobs that you bring to Moorhead?
A: I worked at Williston State College and planned student life events and coordinated student organizations which directly relates to my position now. I also think my positivity is something that I bring to the table, especially when events don't have the turnout students expect.
Q: Is there anything you found surprising about coming back to Moorhead?
A: What didn't surprise me was that the community is still so welcoming. It's a big campus, but has a small town feel where you really get to know people.
Q: What is one thing that you are learning now, and why is it important?
A: The difference in pace for student life events since 2020. Academic learning is also different, with students regularly being offered online classes, so I'm adjusting how to navigate that to better offer a variety student events.
Q: What is your go-to productivity hack?
A: I brain-dump on paper to get all of my thoughts and ideas out there. Other things that I've found helpful are having a change of scenery or taking a short break to walk around campus.
Q: What's one thing most people don't know about you?
A: I'm a good whistler. I can't do the cool two finger whistle, but I do like to whistle as I walk around.
Q: What would we find you doing on the weekends?
A: In the summers I plan weddings and hang out at my parents' lake house. I also love Hallmark movies, hosting friends, and cooking. I love to cook casseroles and steaks-medium-rare, of course-and I'm learning how to better cook chicken.
Q: What show are you currently watching?
A: I just finished Nobody Wants This on Netflix.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you've been given? Who gave it?
A: "All you have is your name, use it wisely." My first job after college was for an event planner, Amy Zaroff, and that was her slogan. I've taken it with me as a reminder to represent myself well and be true to who I am.
Q: If you had a pet dragon, what would you name it?
A: Fireball
