Dragon Face in a New Place: Mahlet Habtemeskel

Mahlet Habtemeskel is MSUM’s new Academic Support Coordinator. In this role,  Mahlet leads the integration of the Tutoring Center and Writing Center into a unified academic support model. She collaborates with faculty, supervises peer tutors, and improves student engagement. Mahlet previously held the position of Academic Advisor and Tutor Program Coordinator.

Q: What made you decide to continue your education and career at Moorhead?

A: I have had many mentors through the years of being at Moorhead that supported and believed in me. They are the reason I chose to continue my education and career at this school. Social capital is so important in work and education, more than money could ever offer, and that has been clear here.

Q: How have your previous roles at MSUM prepared you for this position that you are currently in?

A: My previous roles at MSUM given me a rich foundation in supporting students, academic support, and collaborative leadership. Through my work with students and campus partners, I have developed a deep understanding of the challenges students face and the resources they need to succeed. I have gained experience in tutoring services, academic coaching, program coordination, and building meaningful relationships with students.

I was a product of MSUM; I came as an international student, finished my undergrad and graduate degrees on this campus, which gives me a lot of insight.

Q: What is the best advice you were given and who was it from?

A: Dr. Lee Vigilant, my professor and advisor for my undergrad, helped me realize that if you are always focusing on your weaknesses, your strengths will become your weaknesses as well. So, it is important to invest time in your strengths to keep improving.

Q: How will you be working with students in this role?

A: Although my role includes more leadership and program development, students are the center of my work. I will support students by creating systems that make academic assistance more accessible, effective, and welcoming. I will train peer tutors who work directly with students to ensure they provide high-quality academic support. I will also be working directly with students one-on-one for success coaching.

Q: What energizes you the most outside of your workday?

A:  Remembering that I have a goal and purpose. I love having different things to work on in my personal and work life.

Q: What is the best part of working in your position on a college campus?

A: The most rewarding part of my position is the opportunity to create a lasting impact. Every process you improve and every service you strengthen has the potential to positively impact many students throughout their college journey. I get to combine my passion for student success with strategic thinking, a problem-solving mindset, and organizational development.

It is especially meaningful to work at the same university where I earned my degrees. As a first-generation college graduate, I firsthand understand the transformative power of higher education, and it is deeply fulfilling to give back to the community that invested in me.
