Master of Science in Special Education
The Master of Science in Special Education at Minnesota State University Moorhead is designed to further professional skills in the areas of special education and related research. The program focus is to understand advanced concepts, critically review research, and apply these concepts and research to the professional practice through ongoing, systematic professional development. Within the master’s degree, you may choose to study one of the following specific areas of disability: Developmental Disabilities, Early Childhood Special Education, Physical/Health Disabilities, and Specific Learning Disabilities. In addition, four licensure options are available in the area of Special Education.
Online courses provide you with the flexibility to progress at a pace that fits your lifestyle, so you can find time to advance your education while balancing family and career obligations. You’ll also study a great deal of applied content that can be added to your repertoire and implemented in your classroom immediately.
Nationwide there is a severe shortage of special education teachers. Candidates completing the Special Education master’s or licensures have nearly endless employment opportunities in the region, and boast excellent placement in careers that allow them to pursue their passion for diverse learners.
If you are pursuing a Early Childhood Special Education licensure in MN you could be eligible for up to 6 credits towards your licensure.

Early Childhood Special Education Grant
The Elevating Early Childhood Special Education Grant, available for courses taken through August 2025, provides funding to support students seeking licensure in Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE). Through this grant, students are eligible for up to 6 credits of tuition support.
