Choosing to live in a Learning Community (LC) is one of the best decisions you can make to get engaged and connected at Moorhead. Check out our frequently asked questions to learn more.
What are the benefits of being in a Learning Community?
Participation in a Learning Community at Moorhead enhances student success by fostering deeper academic engagement, stronger social connections, and higher retention rates. From move-in day and beyond, you'll be connected with your Learning Community Mentor and other LC peers as you being to navigate your new normal as a Dragon. These connections will provide you with a sense of belonging and positively impact your overall experience with faculty and students.
Additionally, Learning Community students receive first registration into major specific courses that are set aside for you, along with first access into whichever hall your LC is located in. Students who are looking to enhance their first-year experience and develop life-long connections should strongly consider joining a Learning Community.
What types of experiences will I receive in my Learning Community?
Learning Community students are provided an exclusive experience that includes floor events with your LC peers, insight into course exams and study tips from an upper-class student, and other career exploration related opportunities. The LC program also hosts an annual "Pizza with Professors" event, geared towards connecting you with the faculty teaching your courses, allowing you to form personal connections with them outside of the classroom.
How do I find a roommate if I decide to join a Learning Community?
The Housing Application uses a roommate matching tool to connect you with other Learning Community students. If you are looking for a roommate by utilizing the roommate finder within the Housing Application, you will only be shown other students who have opted to live in the same Learning Community as you. Not seeing a ton of roommate options right away? That's normal - keep checking back in every so often because as more students opt to join a community, you'll see more roommate options.
Is there a cost to participate in a Learning Community?
There is no cost to participate in a Learning Community.
How do I apply to be in a Learning Community?
The Minnesota State Moorhead housing application opens up October 1st every year. You can apply online through the housing application with your Star ID and password. Within the housing application, you will indicate if you’re interested in being in a Learning Community or not. Before doing so, be sure you do your research and find what LC your major falls under so that you can select the correct one within the housing application. When will I know if I have been admitted to a Learning Community?
If a student selects a Learning Community within their housing application, they have secured a spot. When spaces have been claimed, the option for that community will be removed from the housing application. Don't delay, spots go quick!
