Welcome to your new Dragon home! Get ready for your move to campus with important dates, what to bring, where to go, and what to expect on move-in day.

When Do I Move In?

New students should be back on campus and ready for the Dragon Days kick-off at 3:00 pm on Thursday, August 20.

Drop 'N Go
Drop 'n Go is an option for new and returning residents to move in some or all of their items prior to the official campus move-in day. Students must sign up in order to participate in Drop 'n Go by August 5.

Early Arrival
Early arrival is available for approved circumstances such as employment, athletics, student organizations, or significant travel needs.

  • Approval is required. Approval is not guaranteed and may require verification from your supervisor, advisor, coach, or other university representative.
  • Submit an early arrival request. Fall student-athletes do not need to submit a request.
  • Requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Decisions are sent to your MSUM email, and incomplete information may delay processing.

Students returning after Winter Break should check in at their residence hall to reactivate building access.

Interim Housing

For students with fall room assignment.

Summer Housing Details
To be eligible for summer housing, all previous housing charges must be paid in full and your account must be free of any holds. Any MSUM student must be enrolled in at least one summer class or registered for fall classes to live in summer housing.

If you are enrolled for fall semester AND you have a housing contract for fall, you may stay through the interim housing dates at the summer housing rate. At the beginning of August, you will be notified by Housing when you will move into your fall room assignment.

Interim housing is available only for those students who have a fall room assignment. All other students must be checked out by August 1, 5:00 pm.

Current Residents
You will receive your keys for summer housing at the Snarr desk. If you cannot pick up your keys during the Snarr desk hours, email housing and keys will be put into your spring mailbox by 8:15 pm on May 21.

Check out of your current room must be completed by Saturday, May 24 at 10:00 pm.

John Neumaier
If you need summer housing accommodations until you check in to your apartment, you need to apply to live in Snarr Hall for the interim. Please refer to the summer housing rates for Snarr.

For those currently living in John Neumaier: In order to keep your same apartment for summer, your summer contract must be submitted by May 1.

For those living in John Neumaier for the upcoming fall: If you would like to live in a John Neumaier apartment for summer (with an upcoming fall booking), your application/contract must be submitted by May 1. If your apartment is not available for summer, you will be notified the week of May 1.

John Neumaier summer housing ends on July 31. If you are not contracted for fall, you need to be checked out of your apartment by noon (12:00 pm).

 

What Do I Need to Do Before Leaving Home?

Before heading to campus, make sure you've:

  • Reviewed your move-in date and arrival time.
  • Packed everything you'll need, including your Dragon Card or a government-issued photo ID.
  • Left prohibited items at home.
  • Planned your route to campus and reviewed parking information.
  • Packed a cart or dolly if you have one (especially if you're moving into Holmquist Hall, which does not have elevators).
 

What Should I Bring?

Packing for college can feel overwhelming, but this list covers the essentials you'll want to bring to make your new space comfortable, organized, and feel like home.

  • Extra-long twin sheets (XL twin)
  • Pillow
  • Blanket
  • Comforter
  • Mattress pad
  • Towels
  • Washcloth
  • Nelson Upperclass Singles require full-size bedding
  • Shower caddy to carry toiletries
  • Rubber shower flip-flops
  • Hair dryer
  • Shavers
  • First aid kit
  • Medications - allergy, headache or stomach medications
  • Adhesive bandages
  • Sunscreen

While every room has a wardrobe/dresser and/or hanging space, you may run out of room for every piece of clothing (or pair of shoes) that you own. Think practically about what you will need/wear.

If you're planning on going home at fall or winter break, maybe you can trade out summer and winter clothing at that time. Plan ahead and be realistic!

  • High efficiency (HE) detergent for top-loading washers

There are laundry facilities in every hall.

Wi-Fi is provided in the lounges and individual rooms.

You will have access to a printer in your hall, but you may want to bring your own computer if you do not want to use the campus or hall computer labs.

  • Computer
  • TV - must be digital cable ready
  • DVD player
  • Gaming/video game consoles
  • Power strips instead of extension cords - must be rated for a maximum of 15 amps and 1875 watts and have a built-in circuit breaker.
  • TVs must be digital cable ready as we do not have cable convertor boxes.
  • Fairy/twinkle lights or holiday lights - NO LED strips
  • Dishes
  • Utensils
  • Dish towel
  • Dish soap
  • Paper towels
  • Small refrigerator - under 4 cubic feet
  • Microwave - 600-800 watts
  • Fan - a box fan or any medium/large fan is ideal for the first weeks of school
  • Coffee maker with auto-shutoff
  • Clothes iron with auto-shutoff
  • Mini/personal smoothie blenders
  • Air purifier

If there is an appliance you are interested in bringing but is not featured on either list, please email housing@mnstate.edu for clarification.

Tape, tacks or nails cannot be used on the walls (but are okay on bulletin boards).

  • Removable adhesive (such as Command Strips)
    Please leave any Command Strips up for Maintenance to remove so that any damage to the walls or the paint will not result in damage charges when you move.
 

What Shouldn't I Bring?

As you prepare for move-in, please review this list of prohibited items. Leaving these items at home helps maintain a safe, comfortable, and community-friendly living environment for everyone.

  • Candles: even candles that have never been used are not allowed
  • Incense
  • Plug-in air fresheners
  • Wax warmers
  • Potpourri warmers
  • Scentsy or other heated fragrance devices
  • Fireworks
  • Extension cords
  • Multi-plug converters
  • Non-CFL or Heat-Generating lights: halogen lamps, non-UL black lights, non-UL neon lights, incandescent bulbs, paper lamps/lanterns with bulbs, torchiere floor lamps or light kits are not allowed.

Open flames are prohibited in the residence halls. Battery-operated (flameless) candles are a great alternative.

The use of any appliance with open heating coils/element is prohibited.

  • Air fryers
  • Crock pots
  • Pizza cookers (Pizzazz)
  • Toasters
  • Toaster ovens
  • Hot plates
  • Electric skillets and woks
  • Indoor grills (George Foreman grills)
  • Rice cooker
  • Deep fryer
  • Electric sandwich makers/presses
  • Waffle makers
  • Bread makers
  • Hot oil popcorn poppers
  • Broilers
  • Camp stoves
  • Coffee/drink warmers (this does not include coffee makers)
  • Convection ovens
  • Induction cooking appliances
  • Outdoor grills
  • Soldering irons or any electrical appliances that are not UL approved and/or labeled.
  • Ice makers are not allowed; however, you can have a mini-fridge with freezer and ice cube trays
  • Dehumidifiers
  • Humidifiers
  • Heaters: space heaters
  • Air conditioners (A/C units): window or portable

Note: Each hall/floor kitchen is complete with a microwave and toaster.

  • Mattresses
  • Homemade lofts/furniture/Lofts: self-built or purchased lofts are not allowed
    • All residence halls are furnished with versatile twin-XL sized loftable furniture.
    • John Neumaier Apartments are not equipped with lofting capability.
    • Nelson Upperclass Singles are furnished with full-size beds that are not loftable, yet still can be adjusted for height preference.
  • University furniture: If the furniture is from a study lounge, that's where it belongs.
  • Weapons: firearms, weapons, ammunition or facsimiles
  • Alcohol & drugs: including marijuana, empty boxes/containers/packaging, etc.
  • Hazardous materials
  • Toxic chemicals
  • Open flames
  • Combustible materials: Charcoal, gasoline, propane or charcoal starter fluid While grills are available for use around some of the residence halls, storing of many of the typical grilling products is not allowed in the residence halls.
  • Pets: only fish in a 10-gallon or less aquarium are permitted.
  • LED Light Strips: are not allowed as they damage the walls and furniture.
  • Gel Tape: any gel tape, such as 3M Scotch multi-purpose clear tape or 3M VHB tape; double-sided foam tape is also not approved
  • Printers
 

Can I Loft My Bed?

Most residence hall beds can be lofted or adjusted to help you make the most of your space. Review the information below to learn what options are available in your residence hall.

Dahl, Grantham, Holmquist
& Snarr Complex

Beds include built-in lofting capabilities. You do not need a separate loft kit.

Nelson Hall
 

Rooms are furnished with full-size beds that cannot be lofted.

Lofting Policy
 

Homemade or purchased lofts are not permitted in any residence hall.

Check-In

  • Check in at your assigned residence hall.
  • Bring your Dragon Card or a photo ID.
  • Housing staff will provide your room key (if needed) and any move-in materials.
 

Parking & Unloading

  • Follow posted move-in signage when you arrive on campus.
  • Use designated unloading areas near your residence hall.
  • After unloading, move your vehicle to the appropriate parking lot.
